This species, like all crested gibbons, exhibits strong sexual dichromatism. The females usually exhibit a black belly, but the extent of the dark ventral fur is variable. In some females, the dark ventral fur is weekly expressed. Females of N. nasutus also exhibit a dark ventral area, whereas females of other species of crested gibbons have a light ventral area.
